Scoutmaster-Update

Troop 131,

I hope everyone is doing ok after a very rainy weekend!

TROOP MEETING

We will have an in-person Troop meeting at 7:30PM at Immanuel Church on the Hill.

Since we have had two ad-hoc PLC meetings the last two weeks, we will NOT have a PLC this week.

Most of the meeting will center around the Emergency Preparedness Drill, see below, however, we will reserve some patrol time for meal planning.  This is the LAST meeting before the Camporee (due to Columbus Day) so camping and meal planning is critical!

In your patrols, please start your meal planning- see attached T-131 Cooking Duty Roster to aid in this.

EMERGENCY PREPARATION

Most of the Eagle Required Merit badges have a few requirements that are particularly difficult to achieve or accomplish. One such is the Emergency Service Project for the Emergency Preparation Merit Badge.

See info below from Mrs. Pamala Larson who was able to arrange a visit from City Officials to run a drill for us.  You should have a Blue Card for this Merit Badge in hand if you want to get credit for this requirement.

Mr. Larson provided a summary below, however, I attached to this email some additional information, it is a good read, so please review if you can.

This is a ~60-minute functional exercise consisting of one operational period – focus on fire and flooding response, coordination, communication, and situational awareness. Troop 131 will use basic Incident Command to support a response in the fictional town of Central City.
Response
·      Operational Coordination

·      Logistics and Supply Chain Management

·      Establish and maintain a unified and coordinated decision making structure that respects input from all players.

·      Allocate resources to save and protect lives, property, and critical utilities.

Fire, Flooding, and Wild Animal Escape
Central City has several large-scale emergencies that require the City’s limited resources.

Thank you,

Mrs. Larson/Pamela

CAMPOREE

Please sign up for the camporee, this is a good opportunity to meet scouts from other troops and this is a critical time for recruiting!

See email below form Mr. Mulvaney.

It is 14-16 October at the American Legion Youth Camp in Cheltenham, MD.

SIGN UP:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScaYoLSv8MOw9tIom9eZNmqYJKTyIUjr6ndcVDXSY6LeHck-g/viewform

It is $25 per person, Scout or Adult.

Checks delivered at the Monday Meeting to the Treasurer or Committee Chair- they should be made payable to “BSA Troop 131.”  Please put in the notes the activity you are paying for.  Credit Cards at the Monday Meeting (if the treasurer is in attendance) – Processed by the Troop Treasurer.
·        Zelle Account Transfer:
·        Name: TreasurerT131
·        Email: treasurert131@gmail.com
·        That is TreasurerT131 just to reiterate the “T131” aspect.
·        Please put in the notes what activity you are paying for.
Zelle is the easiest and most seamless.

A reminder to ALL Scouts, in addition to your essential 10, you ALL need to have a Full Class “A”, as well as a Class B.  That goes for EVERY Campout, but this one in particular.

If you know any Webelos that will be going, please let Scoutmaster Ramirez know so that he can add them to the list and we can make sure to contact them and give them an invite to dinner!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

SUMMER CAMP- Goshen Camp Bowman or Marriott

The PLC met last week to discuss options for summer camp.  It was a lively discussion and we talked about trying a new location, including camp Rodney in Maryland.  However, the PLC voted for going back to Goshen but trying Bowman or Marriott instead of Olmstead.    The subsequent straw poll at the end of the meeting confirmed this.

The plan is to go again the week the week of 6/25 to 7/1.

There is no dining hall at either camp, the scouts will cook all their own food on site.  The camp provides all the food, gear, stoves, etc- so this will be a good opportunity for you all to work on your cooking skills!

SERVICE HOURS- PUMPKIN PATCH

Thank you all who showed up for the Pumpkin Onloading!

See email below from Mr. Mulvaney, our service coordinator:

Following up on (the) IMOTH PUMPKIN DAY turnout!

Thank you kindly to all who came to provide support for the church in the huge pumpkin unloading today! They were all set by noon! Great job!

I realize some may or may not be present Monday at our meeting and I want to be sure to the track troop’s time spent in service. Those hours are recorded toward our designation in our Journey to Excellence. So, if you attended today’s pumpkin day at the church, please let me know by replying to this email.  That way I have written notice of your scout’s name and the time spent at the church.

If you are present at the meeting Monday, I’ll be happy to sign your handbooks, as I mentioned earlier. It is the scout’s responsibility to track their individual service hours completed toward rank advancement.

Thanks again for all the help.

MERIT BADGE COUNSELORS

We always need help in both the required and elective badges.  I attached to this email the current list of Merit Badge Counselors for the troop.

Please let Mr. Jahns and I know if you have any interest in becoming a merit badge counselor for any of the badges listed.

OUTDOOR CODE

In addition to the oath and law, I would like us to recite the outdoor code during out meetings.

As an American, I will do my best to –

  • Be clean in my outdoor manners.
  • Be careful with fire.
  • Be considerate in the outdoors.
  • Be conservation minded.
