Scoutmaster-Update

Hope everyone is doing well, and from what I heard the camping trip (while a little hot) was a good learning experience.  I attached a Photo from Mr. Irwin of the scouts in action!  The scouts who attended earned their Orienteering Merit Badges, so congratulations to all of you.  Thank you to Mr. Irwin, Mr. Devlin, and Mr. Gross for going on the trip with the scouts!

Just a reminder, we will have a PLC at 7:00 tomorrow. If you are in a leadership position, then you should plan on attending.  Patrol leaders, if you cannot attend, please ask your Assistant Patrol leader to come to your place.

We will discuss the activities for the fall as well as what camping activities you want to do in the new year.

TROOP MEETING

We will have an in-person Troop meeting at 7:30PM at Immanuel Church on the Hill this Monday.

Since we canceled the meeting last week due to weather concerns and even though this is after the camping trip, we will still focus on orienteering skills!

Please bring your compass (this is one of the 10 essentials) to the meeting.  The troop has a few extra that you may borrow if you don’t have one, however, at some point I recommend that you purchase your own (write your name on it).  Every scout should have a magnetic compass.  We recommend the flat “base plate compass” as opposed to the flip up lensatic/prismatic or mirrored compass.

BOARD of REVIEW

This is the last meeting before the August 24th Board of Review.  If you need a Scoutmaster conference or only have a few requirements left to complete/sign off, then this is the time to do it.  As a reminder to the younger scouts please reach out to one of the older scouts (First Class and above) and not the adults if you need something reviewed/signed off in your book.

DONATED CAMPING GEAR

Thanks to a friend of the Mulvaney family, we received a large supply of donated camping gear.  All of it is in very good shape.  The troop will keep some of it for communal use, however, the rest is currently in the shed and any Scout who is interested may claim it.  Please talk to the Quartermaster (Theo) and he can distribute.

The following is the list of donated camping gear.

  • Full Backpack
  • Diving Gear
  • (2) Tents
  • (3) Sleeping Bags
  • Sleeping Back Liner
  • Mess Kit
  • (3) Stuff Sacks
  • (2) Set of Rain Gear
  • Match Box
  • (2) Mosquito Nets
  • Day Pack
  • Mini Carabiners (Troop 131)
  • Compass (Troop 131)

New Requirement for Camping Adult Volunteers

As our Outings Chair, Brendan Mulvaney, mentioned previously, the BSA has a new requirement that ALL adults who camp with the troop even for one night must be officially registered with the troop. This change is effective on September 1st. If you plan to camp with the troop, please take the time to complete the registration process as soon as possible. We can register you as a Unit Participant, which would not include any other responsibilities (until you are ready!).

You can use the link below which will walk you through the process.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if you have completed the application process.

Any questions on any of this or anything else with the troop, please let me know.

Thank you!

SERVICE PROJECT- ALIVE

See note below from Mrs. Mulvaney and Mr. Workman, this is for our sponsor so please consider volunteering!

Hello Troop 131 Scouts & families,

We have another service opportunity to help out Immanuel Church on the Hill and the Alive program. They are looking for some strong, slightly older scouts to help move some furniture for some of our local community members. You will meet at ALIVE warehouse 801 S Payne Street in Old Town Alexandria on Saturday Sept 23, 2023 from approx. 8AM-12 noon.

Description of the event:

This is an opportunity for some of the older Scouts.

Lisa Clausen is Immanuel’s representative to ALIVE. And will be a point of contact for the day. (Scouts that went to Mount Vernon Community School might remember Mrs.Clausen as the school nurse).

ALIVE is in need of some volunteers to pick up and deliver furniture.  They have someone to drive the truck, and are in need of some strong volunteers who can lift and move furniture.  We need 4 strong folks, including one adult or 2scouts/2adults). Alive picks up furniture from people donating and then delivers to people needing those items.  Alive provides the truck driver and the volunteers follow the truck in a car(s). It usually takes 3-4 hours on a Saturday morning.

Please see signup genius below, and sign up if you can attend. Unfortunately, I’m committed to a band competition for Ryan that same day so will not be able to attend.  Please let me know if you have any questions, Samantha Mulvaney 760-583-4147.
